Join us for the 8th ICC European Conference on International Arbitration on 18 & 20 March 2024! The Conference will kick off Paris Arbitration Week on Monday 18 March.
This year’s theme is “Towards Mutual Gain: Navigating Party Interests in Arbitration”
Arbitration is widely recognised for ensuring party autonomy, providing procedural flexibility, and delivering efficient resolutions with predictable costs. However, its potential to align with and prioritise parties' interests, a core element of other methods of alternative dispute resolution, remains underexplored. This year’s ICC European conference will explore to what extent arbitration can transcend its traditional role to consider not just the rights but also the broader interests and objectives of the parties involved. Does it have the capacity to shift from a zero-sum game to a more holistic approach that seeks mutually beneficial solutions?
This is a must-attend event for arbitration professionals wanting to keep pace with the latest arbitral institutional developments and the evolution of arbitration across Europe. Be among our distinguished line-up of speakers, immerse yourself in captivating discussions, and take advantage of exceptional networking opportunities. Be sure not to miss out on this must-attend conference!
An ICC Institute of World Business Law Advanced Training on Dispute Boards will take place on 20 March 2024.

Beyond the Verdict: Exploring Interest-Based Approaches to Arbitration What are the parties’ underlying interests in a dispute, and can they be met within an arbitration? Arbitrators must decide the parties’ dispute within the framework of the law and the requests of the parties. But can and should they do more? What do parties expect from arbitrators and should arbitrators do more than just hear the parties and decide their case? From settlement facilitation to making creative use of arbitrations’ inherent flexibility to maximise value, this session will delve into the opportunities and limits of arbitration as a dispute resolution tool when it comes to addressing the interests underlying a parties’ dispute.

Rendering Decisions with Impact: Writing Awards that Meet Parties’ Needs This panel discussion will explore what parties seek from an arbitral award and the role of arbitrators in meeting these expectations. While arbitrators are expected to decide disputes in accordance with applicable law, this session will explore the nuances of how they apply the law, any flexibility they may have when doing so, and what more arbitrators can do to provide value through their award. We will examine the legitimate expectations of parties regarding rule-based decisions from arbitrators and discuss the delicate balance between legal precision and commercial practicality in arbitration.

ICC Institute of World Business Law Advanced Training on Dispute Boards
Programme originally developed by: David Brown and Cecilia Misu
A Dispute Board (DB) is a method commonly used in complex long-term projects, from joint ventures to engineering and construction projects. It involves an independent committee established by the parties to the construction contract and are, usually, in place from the commencement of the project.
Our one-day DB training is an intensive program designed to equip participants with the skills and expertise they need to enhance dispute avoidance and become familiar with the Dispute Adjudication Board (DAB) process, so that they can confidently act as a dispute board member and advise or represent their clients establishing the DB and manage ongoing operations for maximum effectiveness.
The training will start with an introductory overview of the origins of the DB process. It will include interactive exercises and business case for their use on projects centered around construction issues.
The training will also address topics such as decision writing and challenges of organizing virtual site visits and hearings.
